Fast forward to today, players can play Destiny 2 via Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Google Stadia, and PC world. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a look at Destiny 2 in numbers...

According to recent statistics by Destinytracker.com, more than 22.4 million players have played Destiny 2 since 2017. The same report indicates that the game attracts an average of 500,000 and 600,000 players daily, all which play the game via different platforms. PvE is the most popular mode of the game, attracting close to a million fans. With that said, however, Bungie has been trying to revamp the PVP mode in a bid to boost the number of players and create a more balanced gaming environment.

Destiny 2 For Xbox

Since Destiny 2: Beyond Light expansion was launched in November 2020, Bungie began leveraging the next-gen capabilities of the newer Xbox Series X|S versions by upgrading the game. In December 2020, Nick Heikkila, the principal producer for Bungie took to the Xbox Wire to announce several upgrades and optimization for Destiny 2 that would be implemented at no additional cost to existing Xbox Series X|S owners. Some of them include;

Improved Loading Speeds

One of the promises made by Nick Heikkila was improved loading speeds across different Destiny 2’s systems. Whether it’s the launching speed, menu navigation speeds, or even UI elements loading speeds, all the Destin 2s heavily trafficked portions were optimized to ensure smooth gameplay and faster responsiveness.

4K Resolution Gameplay

In support of the newly expanded Destiny 2, Bungie rolled out improvements for all Xbox Series X players, key among them being visual improvements including support for HDR and 4K. Still, Series X and Series S users can enjoy up to 60 frames per second, which greatly improves the gameplay and visuals.

120Hz Crucible Mode

Xbox Series X users can also enjoy the new optional mode, which helps them ramp up their maximum Frames Per Second on compatible displays to a whopping 120. In high-level Player vs Player mode where every frame counts, this optional mode allows players to enjoy the fastest and most optimal Crucible available for a particular console.

Customizable Field of View

On top of playing aesthetics purposes, the field of view slider also plays an important role in the gameplay. For example, a wide view lets you see more enemies, plus makes them more visible and easier to aim at.

Alternatively, you can narrow your view and drag the slider to make the targets much larger, and constrict your peripheral vision.

Cross-Save and Cross Generation Gameplay

Bungie also partnered with Xbox to ensure that all Xbox Series X|S devices are compatible with Xbox One. This means that Xbox Series X|S owners and owners of Xbox One can play without having incompatibility issues.

Bungie also developed Cross-Save functionality, a feature that allows players to switch between multiple platforms without losing the progress of their characters.

Destiny 2 For PS5

Just like in Xbox, Destiny 2 also received next-generation upgrades after the launch of the PlayStation 5 in November 2020. And although the PS5 version does come with dozens of improvements over its PS4 counterpart, there are a few missing advanced features like the Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback. With that said, however, pundits predict that Bungie may be adding these features down the road.

Better Resolution and Framerate

Just like the Xbox version of Destiny 2, the PS5 offers improved resolution and framerate. The game comes with a native 4K resolution and 60 FPS, with the PvP mode having an optional mode to run at 120hz for monitors and TVs. This is a great improvement from the older PS4 versions which run at 1080p and 4K resolution.

PS4 Pro, on the other hand, can still achieve 4K resolution, although you need to implement a technique called checkerboarding, which entails crisscrossing two images via Beebom to increase the number of pixels. Unfortunately, this can cause artifacting, ultimately making the patterns in the image less visible and blurred.

Faster Loading Speeds and Field of View Slider

One of the major improvements of PS5 is the inclusion of an SSD expansion, which gives it faster loading speeds over the previous hard drive generations. Bungie touted the faster loading times for Destiny 2, although the cross-generation play has been said to relatively decreasingdecrease the loading times.

Another major feature in the PS5 Destiny 2 version is the Field of View Slider. Although it was previously available on PC, it does allow players to adjust how zoomed the world appears. As a result, it becomes easier to decipher what’s going on in the environment, as well as the overall visual representation of the game.

Differences Between Destiny 2 For Xbox and PS5

Generally, there aren’t significant differences between Destiny 2 for Xbox and PS5. However, Destiny 2 for PS5 doesn’t leverage PS5’s unique features, such as the DualSense support for adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Still, players can’t use any controller save for the DualSense to play it. As such, if you’re used to using the back buttons on a custom or premium controller, this capability is missing.

Along with that, Bungies didn’t fully take advantage of PS5’s unique Tempest 3D audio engine. Although the audio is technically 3D via headphones, it doesn’t have the “wow” factor. Again, this is something that we hope both Bungie and Sony are working on improving.

While the next-generation improvements beyond the frame rate are relatively thin, Destiny 2 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series utilizes the enhanced capabilities of each machine wisely to deliver a competitive online improvement.
