In the past, video games were relatively simple. There were a limited number of game consoles on the market, and most games were developed by in-house teams or small independent studios.

As a result, it was fairly easy to determine whether a given game was high quality or not. There was a simple criteria that determined the best video game much like there are factors that determine the best online casino today.

Nowadays, however, the video game industry is much more complex. There are dozens of different game consoles available, and many games are developed by large studios with hundreds of employees.

This makes it much harder to determine whether a given game is high quality or not even though it shouldn't be. Just because a famous game development studio created a game it doesn't mean it will be any good. That being said, here's how to determine if a video game has quality.

Are there any objective criteria that can be used to measure the quality of a video game?

There are a number of objective criteria that can be used to measure the quality of a video game. These include the graphics, the gameplay, the storyline, the overall appeal of the game, playability and so on. However, most of the younger gamers today will settle for simplicity and good graphics. The rest don't really matter to them. That's why modern games, although visually appealing, don't have much to offer in terms of gameplay or anything else really.

How can you tell if a video game has lasting value or is just a passing fad?

Games you can finish once and return to again to try another path, make different choices or simply replay them because they were awesome and thus made a lasting impression on you, indeed, have a lasting value. Of course, this is based on personal preferences but there are games that everyone can enjoy for years.

That includes both single player and online games like MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). On the other hand, games that are just a passing fad are usually those that are overly marketed and promoted and over hyped but leave you with a simple meh! once you finish them. These games are usually designed to boost sales while the hype is alive and not offer much in terms of enjoyment.

Why do some people prefer older video games?

First of all, the main reason why people love older video games is that these games had to be finished before they were launched. Once you bought them on a CD or DVD you had a complete game. Very rarely would there be any significant glitches or bugs that would break the game. If the game was particularly popular, the development studio would release expansions, which provided you with additional content and new features. Today, games are usually released half-baked and broken.

You pay a studio at least $60 for a game that's clearly not developed well in hopes that they might fix it completely in the next five years or so. You get so-called DLCs that provide some new content and fixes for the game but you have to pay for those as well. As old-fashioned as this may sound, you at least knew that the game you're paying for had quality back in the day, not the other way around.

It's relatively easy to determine if a video game has quality or not. The unfortunate thing is that we're settling for less nowadays, which is why video game companies don't bother to make an effort anymore.
