PS4 gamers who want to use their expensive capture devices to record gameplay may need to purchase additional hardware to scramble the HDCP protection. The Xbox One will allow players to capture footage over HDMI without the hinderance HDCP (High-Bandwidth Copyright Protection),

"Xbox One will support gameplay footage capture just as it works on Xbox 360," a Microsoft representative said.

Here are some tips for recording gameplay on PS4 and Xbox One. I hope you guys find this useful.

Xbox One:
Microsoft confirms capture over HDMI will be DRM-free.
As the march toward the launch of the next-gen consoles creeps forward, Microsoft has provided insight into the Xbox One's support for gameplay video capture kits. In a statement issued today, Microsoft confirmed that the system will allow players to capture footage over HDMI without the hinderance HDCP (High-Bandwidth Copyright Protection), maintaining the capacity to record gameplay for machinima videos, commentaries, and highlight reels.

PlayStation 4
If you want to record your own gameplay videos on the PS4 using your exisitng ELGATO or other capture device then you'll need to learn how remove HDCP protection. HDCP requires a HDMI connection for the encryption/protection to be able to work. One work around is to use a HDMI to DVI cable and a scramble box like the MonoPrice HDMI Convertor.

To record your own Xbox One or PS4 gameplay, you will need to pickup the following equipment. You can still use your elgato, Hauppage HD PVR 2 or any other HDMI PVR with this method.

METHOD 1
1.x Monoprice DVI & S/PDIF Digital Coax/Optical Toslink Audio to HDMI Converter
1 x HDMI to DVI Convertor (Once HDMI is converted to DVI, the HDCP protection is scambled)
1 x TOSlink Fibre Optic Cable (For sound)
1 x HDMI Cable

Here's a video that will explain things for you all and show you how to connect it all up and proof that its working on PS4. Smile

METHOD 2:
I have read elsewhere that if you pick up a Monoprice Mini HDMI Splitter, it does the same job and you don't need so many cables. I can't find any proof of this yet though.

I know the guys at Achievement Hunter / Roosterteeth are not happy about this because they want to do videos in Killzone.

Just Sony up to it's old tricks again.

It sounds like you won't have any dramas recording on day one. I on the other hand have to upgrade. I only just bought my new device this week, so it probably wont get here until Monday. Then i can record.. Be sure to let us know that you can record gameplay too, i hope we can.

I upgraded to an elgato, i was happy at first but then i realized that it waits until after you press record to start transcoding the mp4 file. My laptop froze and i lost a heap of videos.. That never happens on my Hauuppage.. Also an elgato can only capture videos as good as what your pc is.. I only use an old laptop, it can only handle 720p and drops frames like a bitch.

It looks like I'm going back to hauupage since it has a dedicated processor in the box that encodes the mp4 video and only uses the laptop to save it. You never get dropped frames that way either. As long as the new HD PVR 2 from hauupage supports 60fps i will get it.

Sucks to be me.. lol

Great link for the PS4 capture youtube tutorial video. Looks like HDMI-DVI and reconverting the DVI to HDMI can be used to record copy protected videos in general, like blu-ray or PS4 videos.

Very informative. Thanks Hobbs
