How Devil May Cry and Octopath Traveller Impacted Worldless Developer: New Video Shows
The second developer video for Worldless, the atmospheric 2D adventure game from Thunderful, Coatsink and Noname Studios, has been released. The video reveals more details about the game's mechanics, ahead of its release on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC this week.
Worldless is a stylised metroidvania platformer featuring a unique turn-based action combat system, RPG-style upgrades and a compelling high-concept story for players to figure out for themselves. The game’s combat requires the strategy typically associated with turn-based systems, but adds an element of real-time action thanks to timing-based elements when defending and combining attacks. An intricate skill tree adds new layers to combat encounters, as well as opening up new avenues for you to explore the game’s atmospheric world.
Following on from the first combat breakdown video, it explains how the game implements inspirations from titles like Devil May Cry and Octopath Traveller in its mix of turn-based and real-time combat, as well as giving as a tease of the game’s challenging boss encounters.
Creative and Animation Director, Joel Roset, explains the importance of the “Absorption Tank”, a key mechanic present in combat that fills when the player inflicts damage on an enemy and is depleted by taking hits. He details the risk/reward calculations players must make when deciding to slowly fill the Absorption Tank and reveal all of the attack inputs or speed things up a notch by guessing inputs. Joel also talks about how Worldless incorporates a system similar to the ‘Style Meter’ in Devil May Cry games when it comes to absorption damage and a block system inspired by the Octopath Traveler ‘Stagger’ system. He even offers a taste of Worldless’ challenging boss fights and how combining your skills is key to success.
Worldless is coming to Xbox Series X | S & Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5,Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam) on November 21, 2023.
